Papa Cyrus says he was surprised by Miley's Vanity Fair photo
NEW YORK — Billy Ray Cyrus says he wasn't around when Annie Leibovitz photographed his 15-year-old daughter, Miley, wrapped in a sheet with her back exposed, for the June issue of Vanity Fair magazine.
"I wasn't there at the time," the 46-year-old country star said in an interview Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show.
"[Miley's] publicist was there, and everyone seemed in control," he said. "I didn't know they [were] gonna strip her down and wrap her with a blanket."
"So I was surprised when I saw it, you know, but ... stuff happens. That's life. Things happen and sometimes things get a little out of control, and you just gotta deal with life," he said. "Again, it's peaks and valleys and ups and downs."
Cyrus, who co-stars with Miley in Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana," said Leibovitz was a "good person and a great photographer" but looking back, he would have stayed to chaperone the photo shoot.
Another photo in the Vanity Fair spread that caused a stir was the image of Miley in a black tank top that revealed her midriff as Cyrus held her in his arms.
When asked if that photo was a mistake, Cyrus said: "It's not a mistake to me. If it is to someone else, I'm sorry if I offended somebody, but no, that's just a daddy that loves his daughter a whole lot."
Cyrus said he and Miley "got caught up in this adventure that we've gone through with this dream, and what we do for a living. ... We both love acting, we love making music and we love each other. I'm her dad and she's my daughter, so if a daddy hasn't hugged his daughter recently, I'd recommend he does."

Probst: Production problems on `Survivor: Gabon'
Jeff Probst says the upcoming season of "Survivor" has already hit a few snags.
"Survivor: Gabon - Earth's Last Eden" has been plagued with several preproduction problems, Probst told The Associated Press at the opening of the new restaurant Gordon Ramsay at The London West Hollywood on Wednesday. The dilemmas for the 17th season of the CBS reality show, which begins filming in Africa later this month, range from encroaching animals to slow shipments.
"Our shipping has been really delayed," Probst said. "One aspect of 'Survivor' that is different from a lot of shows is that we have to ship throughout the season, and we're about 30 days behind now, which is a major problem. We're going to be fine on the show, but the crew housing is not there. We're going to be in tents."
Other than the habitation hindrance, Probst also said a crane had fallen over and a cargo hold containing about $100,000 worth of food had gone missing. The lumber used for building props and set pieces for challenges and Tribal Council, however, had safely arrived. Probst said the "Survivor" crew was also having an issue with something that was already present: wildlife.
"We have a danger problem with animals that we're trying to figure out how to handle," the "Survivor" host said. "There's so much truly wild life out there, we're not sure what to do. We don't want the animals around for a safety reasons, but we'd love to have a hippo sneak in every so often. I just got a call from our executive producer that we've got hippo tracks at base camp."
"Survivor: Gabon," which will feature 18 castaways living in the wilderness in the West African country, will be filmed in high-definition and is slated to premiere in the fall. It's the first time the competitive reality series has returned to Africa since its Kenya-set third season. Probst said he doesn't think the snafus will halt production.
"These things for us usually have a way of turning into good things," he said.

Weezer, The Red Album
Weezer have been releasing records with varying commercial and cult success for 14 years, and their latest offering The Red Album is quintessentially theirs, but with a somewhat misguided twist. The noticeable difference with this, their sixth effort, is that it lacks a sense of coherency and direction, probably as a result of frontman Rivers Cuomo relinquishing overall control and making the creative process a free-for-all. This has worked in places, but overall the tracks feel unfinished and distract from the increased experimentation originally intended.
Like its predecessors there are that handful of truly amazing power-pop tracks which demand you sit up and pay attention, or dance around your room. Lead single Pork and Beans, alongside Troublemaker and Everybody Get Dangerous exemplify Cuomo's signature punchy cords and lyrics, drenched in satirical wit and geeky bravado. Flanking these musical powerhouses are several slow burners which benefit from a few listens. They are like a pleasant country drive you're quite enjoying, until you realise each hedgerow looks like the next and you are left wondering why you got in the car in the first place.
The saving grace of this album is The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations On A Shaker Hymn), with a glorious mish-mash of styles, ideas and genres that would sit most happily in an obscure Swedish prog set. If this is the future of the aging Weezer then the future is sounding good. That is if the band concentrate more on this type of intensive diversity, and less on the sort of mediocre meandering on the second half of the record. An album easily dismissed on first listen, this is actually better than you think.

Razorlight - Razorlight Frontman Named For Climate Change Gig
Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell is to play an exclusive concert as part of a campaign to change proposed climate change laws.
The Big Ask, a climate change campaign organised by Friends of the Earth, has played an integral role in convincing the government to commit to legally binding reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
However, carbon emissions from the aviation and shipping industries have not been included in the new law, leading the likes of Radiohead singer Thom Yorke, KT Tunstall, comedian Sean Hughes and Borrell to back The Big Ask's 'virtual flight' initiative.
Borrell is to play a one-off acoustic show in front of a commercial jet in the aviation room of London's Science Museum to highlight the importance of including aviation emissions in the Climate Change, and called on fans to lend their support to the campaign.
"The Big Ask has been very successful in making the Climate Change Law a reality," he explained.
"But it seems unbelievable that the bill and the government plans to ignore emissions from aviation and shipping. Those industries should absolutely be included in calculations.
"I want to help make sure people know what's happening while there's still time to influence the law."
The Golden Touch star added: "The more people who get on board and email their MP at www.thebigask.com, the more chance we have of getting a sensible law."
Yorke described the Climate Change Bill as "fantastic news" and said "as many people as possible" should take part in the campaign to stress the importance of including the UK's share of international aviation emissions in the bill.
Fans have until May 27th to win tickets to the show.

John Taylor hits out at Madonna
Rip it up and art again
The former Orange Juice frontman is releasing the single in a limited run of 1,500 and, in what Collins's website calls a "Willy Wonka golden-ticket tradition", fans won't know whether they've lucked out until they get home and take the record out of its packaging.
Each single contains a paper sleeve printed with one of Collins's distinctive pencil drawings. But 25 of these drawings have been coloured or added to by celebrity fans of his. These include include Richard Hawley, the Buzzcocks' Pete Shelley and Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller.
Collins suffered a major brain haemorrhage in February 2005 and his physical rehabilitation is ongoing. As part of his therapy he has had to relearn how to draw, this time with his left hand, and it's one of these drawings which decorates the single.
Home Again was the title track on his 2007 solo album, recorded prior to his illness. All profits from the single will go to Connect, an aphasia support organisation that helped Collins during his recovery.
On June 9, Collins will perform with Aztec Camera's Roddy Frame and launch an exhibition of the customised record sleeves at the Social, in London. The exhibition continues for four weeks, and the Home Again seven inch - golden tickets and all - will be released on June 23.
